Well, another transfer window comes and goes, and Liverpool has chosen to stick rather than twist. Did we ever really expect anything different?

Even with the likes of Jamie Carragher urging his former side to bring in a new defender, the Reds were left unmoved throughout the January window, with deadline day proving to be something of a non-event. The truth is though, we all probably expected that.

That shouldn’t be taken as a dig to the club’s owners - as the old saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But considering what is possible for Liverpool this season, there’s no denying that FSG has taken a big gamble on Arne Slot’s side.

The Dutchman has worked wonders since replacing Jurgen Klopp in the summer, and with just one new addition to his squad this season, he has the Reds in pole position for the Premier League title and still in the running for what would be a remarkable quadruple.

Liverpool’s season won’t be defined by whether they go on to win all four trophies this season, but with a six-point lead and a game in hand, the league has to be the absolute minimum. It’s a task that should be well within their grasp, but it's made all the harder by the sheer number of games the Reds will have to play between now and the end of the season.

If that proves to be too big a toll on Slot’s squad and they surrender their lead to Arsenal, it won’t be the Dutchman that comes in for the harshest criticism. By not adding to the group, FSG has essentially decided Slot already has all the tools at his disposal to win the title - if he doesn’t, they can expect an almighty backlash from supporters.

And that’s not all. The title is the priority right now, but in the background, the ongoing uncertainty around Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Mohamed Salah threatens to take the gloss off what could be a momentous season.

Even if Liverpool wins the title, it could face heading into next season having lost its three biggest names, which just adds to the to-do list for the summer. Having not brought in anyone for the last 34 days, there is already plenty to keep Richard Hughes busy before he considers having to find replacements for the Reds’ main source of goals, their most creative option and their best defender.

FSG has taken a risk by not adding to Slot’s squad over the last month or so. Is it a risk too far? The next few months will provide the answer.
